Vitamin D Council

February 26th, 2009 No comments

A few years back I heard of Vitamin DW’s positive influence on our health. Vitamin D Council offered the only comprehensive information on vitamin D on the web. Our family has been supplementing with vitamin D during winter months with great results.  Since there is more news about vitamin D nowadays with sometime conflicting information I’ve decided to share this resource with you.

Recent story from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Turning Learning Right Side Up

February 25th, 2009 1 comment

Today I started reading Turning Learning Right Side Up: Putting Education Back on Track by Russell L. Ackoff, Daniel Greenberg. I am only on the first chapter but I can already see the wisdom in it.  Although written largely about schools, there is plenty to learn from it for a homeschool parent. I will comment on it as I read through it. By the way, Russell L. AckoffW is a famous American systems thinking pioneer and author of many excellent books I’ve enjoyed reading over the years.

Well – The 3 R’s? A Fourth Is Crucial, Too – Recess – NYTimes.com

A small study of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder last year found that walks outdoors appeared to improve scores on tests of attention and concentration. Notably, children who took walks in natural settings did better than those who walked in urban areas, according to the report, published online in August in The Journal of Attention Disorders. The researchers found that a dose of nature worked as well as a dose of medication to improve concentration, or even better.

Bridge Construction Set – Software

February 17th, 2009 1 comment

Here is a great bridge design software for your homeschooler. We have used this application prior to our homeschooling experiment. All our kids have had a great time trying to design a working bridge and then optimize it.  It just may be the thing that awakens the engineer in your kid. Chronic Logic also has two other bridge design software applications but we have not tried those.
