Today I started reading Turning Learning Right Side Up: Putting Education Back on Track by Russell L. Ackoff, Daniel Greenberg. I am only on the first chapter but I can already see the wisdom in it. Although written largely about schools, there is plenty to learn from it for a homeschool parent. I will comment on it as I read through it. By the way, [W:Russell L. Ackoff] is a famous American systems thinking pioneer and author of many excellent books I’ve enjoyed reading over the years.
I’ve finished reading this book. I believe authors accurately identify what is wrong with the current system and offer possible solutions. I may not fully agree with everything they say but this book is meant to be a starting point of a critical look at our educational system. The aim of the current system is teaching. Ackoff and Greenberg point out that the aim ought to be learning. I and, I believe, many homeschooling parents instinctively know this is indeed the case – the aim is learning!
